Dentist-patient relationship

The dentist- patient relationship: perceived dentist behaviors that reduce patient anxiety and increase satisfaction. Corah N.L. et al. JADA 1988:116:73-76

The researchers asked250 adultsto respond to 25dentist behaviors after receiving treatment. Positive reactions were recorded in response to ten behaviors perceived to be associated with anxiety reduction: specially, empathy, friendliness and communicativeness. The dentistÕs anxiety about the patient and the patientÕs anxiety about the dentist make for a dental procedure that can be difficult for both of them. The patients frequently recommanded that dentists: 1. give initial explanatioons of what was going to happen during dental procedure. 2. give an inprocess explanation to let the patient know what is happeneding as it is going on. 3. instruct the patient to be calm. 4. warn the patient about pain when it is likely to occur. 5. verbally support the patient 6. try to give the patient ways of looking at the procedure in a less- threatening fashion and provide coaching to make them believe it is not as bad as they expect it to be. 7. provide distraction of attention and try to communicate in ways that will build trust in the dentist °ú°Å ¿¬±¸¿¡ÀÇÇϸé Ä¡·áºÒ¾È¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ¹ÝÀÀÀÇ 20-25%´Â Ä¡°ú¿¡ µµÂø½Ã ±×¸®°í Ä¡·á¿¡ ´ëÇÑ È¯ÀÚÀÇ ÀϹÝÀûÀÎ ºÒ¾È¿¡ ÀÇÇØ °áÁ¤µÈ´Ù°í ÇÑ´Ù.
